Conversion of a cellar into an apartment

Convert and regenerate new spatialities and functions. Use existing spaces designed and reconfigured to meet new needs.

In a historic building in the centre of Sulmona, the owners had a cellar that they wished to convert into an apartment. The transformation posed significant challenges, as the building is protected as a site of historical importance. Therefore, the project not only required standard refurbishment work but also a careful consideration of preserving the pre-existing features.

Flat Design

A spacious living area was designed, encompassing both the lounge and the kitchen. The living area is separated by a hallway and a central service zone, which includes technical systems, a laundry area, and storage. The sleeping area comprises a large bedroom and a generously sized bathroom, equipped with a shower and all necessary amenities.

The existing load-bearing stone walls, barrel-vaulted ceilings, and ribbed vaults create expansive, nearly double-height spaces. The primary interventions, besides creating new interior spaces and functions, also focused on the enhancement and refurbishment of the existing spaces, particularly the requalification of the walls and vaults. Where aesthetically appealing, the walls were uncovered and restored, revealing their natural stone and brick finishes.

Additionally, new technical and technological systems were integrated into the flat, such as heating, hot and cold water supply for sanitary fittings, and carefully designed lighting for both walls and ceilings. The kitchen, along with various other apartment features, was thoughtfully designed. The project culminated in an excellent result, blending modern comfort with historic charm.
