Intervening on existing projects is not an easy job, as it requires a lot of knowledge and experience, especially in the commercial field, where the realization time and the investment cost are very incisive. As well as using the same activity on premises already aviati complicates things more, as we need a new luk and new presentation to give an impact of originality.

This project was already commissioned to a designer, who then subsequently disappeared from the scene.

Therefore adapt the project to the new client’s needs, above all having already an idea given by other designs and a considerable commitment.

The idea of our project was the realization of a commercial space of easy transformation, for its use, both as a bar and as a restaurant, and above all with the possibility that in the evening they could organize pub-style music evenings. The place in the previous conditions, had no significant style, so I decided to opt for the industrial style, especially as the Middlesburogh area is entirely an area dominated by industries, so this style could make sense in the context of project idea.

The design work started, from advice to choices on the representative logo, which being a widely used name had to stand out and be original at the same time. Therefore it was decided to underline the first letter of the word Aroma. giving it 2 meanings, in Rome which would be the Italian capital, which recalls the type of food that the place provides. and always maintaining the aroma of the flavors that Italian cuisine offers.

Subsequently, we moved on to the spatial reconfiguration, deciding to open the kitchen to the public, making the public also a spectator during the preparation of food.

It was decided to remove decorative elements from the old restaurant to make space for new ideas that were taking hold.

Once the spaces were reconfigured, with the demolition of the existing counters, and furniture elements that were now obsolete, the space was freed up further and the environments became more functional. Generating hospitality space, bar space and kitchen space.

It was decided to keep part of the flooring as it was made of wood, so the wood of the existing flooring was reused and reworked. The intervention on the existing floor was therefore a minimalist stripping and repainting, leaving the effect of the wood dominating, which blended perfectly with the color of the bricks always left exposed.

Bar Counter and Beverage Preparation Area

  1. Overall Design Concept:

    • Industrial Style: The bar counter embodies an industrial aesthetic, utilizing a combination of chromed metal structures and black granite for the countertop. The choice of materials highlights a sleek, modern look that balances elegance with practicality.
    • Functionality: Ample space is allocated for essential equipment such as dishwashers, sinks, refrigerators, and coffee machines. The layout ensures efficiency and ease of access for staff.
  2. Material Choices:

    • Countertop: Black granite is selected for its durability and sophisticated appearance. It offers a seamless, easy-to-clean surface that maintains hygiene standards.
    • Coatings: Dark glass lids are incorporated to enhance the reflective quality of the environment, adding a touch of luxury and modernity.

Kitchen Counter as a Meeting Point

  1. Design Concept:

    • Integration: The kitchen counter serves as a bridge between the public area and the food preparation zone. This design promotes interaction and transparency, allowing patrons to observe the culinary process.
    • Material Continuity: Utilizing the same black granite for the kitchen counter ensures a cohesive look throughout the space, unifying the bar and kitchen areas.
  2. Material Choices:

    • Metal Profiles: Chromed metal profiles are used to comply with hygiene regulations, ensuring a clean and safe food preparation environment.
    • Black Granite: Consistent with the bar counter, the black granite workbench unifies the aesthetic and provides a durable, easy-to-maintain surface.

Industrial Style and Decorative Elements

  1. Color Scheme:

    • Black Countertops: The choice of black for the countertops adds a dramatic, sophisticated element to the design, enhancing the industrial feel.
    • Rusty Metal Coatings: This industrial element is carried throughout the space, including lighting fixtures, creating a cohesive and robust design language.
  2. Wall Design:

    • Hexagonal Walls: The walls are designed with hexagonal patterns using ceramic coatings that have a concrete effect. This not only adds texture and visual interest but also ties into the industrial theme.
    • Tetris Motif: One wall features a design inspired by the classic game Tetris. This nod to early electronic games adds a nostalgic touch, aligning with the industrial age’s innovative spirit.

Lighting Design

  1. Direct and Indirect Lighting:

    • Direct Lighting: Strategically placed to highlight key areas such as the bar counter and kitchen, ensuring functionality and enhancing the aesthetic appeal.
    • Indirect Lighting: Used to create ambiance, emphasizing the industrial design elements and providing a warm, inviting atmosphere.
  2. Stage Lighting:

    • Purpose: Adds versatility to the space, allowing for dynamic lighting adjustments for different events and activities.
    • Integration: Seamlessly incorporated into the design, ensuring that it complements rather than overwhelms the overall aesthetic.

Conclusion

The project showcases a meticulous balance between functionality and aesthetics, achieved through thoughtful material choices and design coherence. The industrial style, with its emphasis on black granite, chromed metal, and unique decorative elements like the Tetris wall, creates a space that is both modern and nostalgic, ensuring a memorable experience for patrons. The integration of direct and indirect lighting further enhances the space, making it versatile and adaptable for various events and moods.

Bar and kitchen counter

Metal structures of the counters after their rough construction.

For economic and timing reasons, the client decided to buy ready-made tables and chairs. We are happy that despite the timing not in our favor, and all the problems of the construction site, as many local businesses and artisans were involved, in the end we managed to conclude the project in a coherent way with the idea and concept conceived. An appreciable work for the execution of the project is due to Colosseum Construction ltd, Nico Construction and Delta Light, as well as to the director of the company in charge at the time who believed in me giving me free paper in all the choices.
